Idol Hands – Tech Update (April 2015)

AprilIUpdate01

For the last month, the team apart from working on updates has also been working on some cool stuff. One of the interns in our office, James has been working alongside me to work on new shader techniques to support DX11. When we started off with Idol Hands, we were using Unity 3.5, however as Unity changed versions the graphics architecture also changed. Since we had written most of shaders ourselves (and not the inbuilt ones) upgrading to the new shader techniques was necessary. So in the upcoming months, the visual effects that you will be see in the game will have DX11 support.
Another of our team members, Nikhil has been working on procedural terrain generation. This feature would help us easily create multiple levels and add more content to the game. read more

Idol Hands is a real-time strategy game, featuring two gods facing off, each with a village of Furlings who are primitive creatures you assign roles to.

The gameplay is rather simple in its mechanics, as there is no direct manipulation of the Furlings, and no direct base building. Your Furlings will look for the nearest flat land to build their hut and increase your village borders. This means that the game is very easy to get into. read more

For me, cackling gleefully to myself as I imagined all the destruction I was about to unleash, the elevator ride was a short, joyful affair. For the other occupant, Rebecca, perhaps not, given that she was riding in a confined space next to a stranger with a devilish look in his eye.

I should explain. You see, those folks over at Pocket Games and Green Man Loaded have been playing God recently, and at the end of last week they invited a few of us up to the studio to join them for an hour or so to do just the same. read more
